Check your BIOS to see if your sound device is active and if not then activate it. If it is active and Skyrim still sends the error message then check to see if your sound device drivers are up to date. If the sound device is active and the sound drivers are up to date the only other thing I can suggest is to do a re-installation of the game.
I was playing Skyrim earlier today when my computer locked up on me (this happens from time to time, my video card over heats and I've just been too lazy to buy a new one that isn't a piece of junk). I had to hold down the power button to boot it back up and when I got back to my desktop none of my programs would play sound. I heard system sounds just fine and I could test my headphones from the control panel just fine also. I found out that none of the programs I boot are being put into my audio mixer and when trying to boot up Skyrim again it gave me this message 'No sound device detected. Skyrim cannot run'.
So far I've tried:
Uninstalling and reinstalling my sound drivers

Error No Sound Device Detected Skyrim Cannot Run
- SkyrimLauncher starts, but the game can't be launched, because it claims there is no audio device. My debugging went roughly the following way: First, I checked winecfg in Proton's Wine environment. The sound was set to Pulseaudio and the test sound worked.
- Page 1 of 2 - VERY low sound. posted in Skyrim Technical Support: Hey what's up everyone. So, I had skyrim preloaded as I pre purchased it via Steam. I've had no problems, besides one very big problem. The audio is so low it makes the game nearly unplayable. ( I mean, it is TECHNICALLY playable, but who enjoys playing a game with sound so low you can't hear anything) Even with my speakers.
- The sound device can not be found. According to my friend the sound was working originally with the installed OS of Vista. Not sure if it was Vista 32 or 64. Anyway so he formats the drive destroying the restore folder and installs Win 7 32bit on the hard drive. All of a sudden the sound doesn't work, with no device.
